Kendal Eco-Shop Secures Future With Six-Year Lease Extension.

A popular zero-waste shop in Kendal has secured its future after signing a six-year extension to its lease at Wainwright’s Yard.

Another Weigh has renewed its tenancy until July 2032, providing the independent eco-shop with a longer-term base after first opening at the retail yard in February 2021. The shop was founded by Amy Bray when she was just 17 and operates using a refill-and-reuse model. Customers can bring their own containers and purchase loose food and household products by weight, helping reduce the amount of packaging used.

Another Weigh also has a wider environmental purpose, with profits from the shop supporting Another Way, an environmental charity focused on encouraging young people to take action on climate issues through conservation projects. The business said the decision to extend its lease reflects its commitment to serving customers in Kendal and providing more accessible sustainable shopping options.

Jodie Van Rooyen, from the Another Weigh team, said the staff were pleased to make the commitment to existing and new customers. She also highlighted that the shop is now open on Mondays, following feedback from customers about when they need to shop.

The team also believes recent hot and dry summers may have encouraged more people to think about their environmental impact and consider practical changes to their everyday shopping habits. Another Weigh says sustainable living does not necessarily have to involve major or expensive changes. The shop aims to help more households in Kendal find alternatives that can reduce waste while fitting into their normal routines.

The lease extension has also been welcomed by the landlord, Eric Wright Group. Jonathan Phillips, speaking on behalf of the company, said Another Weigh had demonstrated that a social enterprise could achieve long-term commercial stability while contributing to the modern high street.

The landlord also highlighted the shop's independent character and its contribution to attracting visitors to Wainwright’s Yard, alongside other businesses operating at the town-centre location. With its new lease running until 2032, Another Weigh is set to continue developing its refill-and-reuse approach while supporting wider environmental activity through Another Way.
