Iconic Lake District Hotel Falls into Liquidation What This Means for Borrowdale and Tourism

The Scafell Hotel Ltd, a well-known Lake District hotel located in Rosthwaite, Borrowdale, has been placed into creditors’ voluntary liquidation, according to a notice published in the London Gazette.
Joint liquidators from Armstrong Watson have been appointed to handle the affairs of the business after it ceased trading and closed “a couple of years ago,” with the empty building still standing in the valley.
The decision to liquidate follows years of ownership changes and attempts to sell the property including a 2023 listing seeking offers around £2.75 million after long-time operator Miles Jessop, who bought the hotel in 1971, retired. His departure marked the end of an era, as the hotel had been in the hands of the previous family owners for nearly five decades before his stewardship.
Originally built as a private residence for artist Mary Barker, one of the first women recorded to climb Scafell Pike alongside William Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy, the property sits on about five acres and historically offered guests 23 en-suite bedrooms, a 60-cover restaurant, lounges and a Riverside Bar.
Local residents and tourism supporters will be watching closely to see what happens next with the landmark building, which has stood empty since closing and is part of a broader pattern of challenges facing hospitality businesses in rural areas where rising operating costs and fluctuating visitor numbers continue to impact viability.
Armstrong Watson has said it currently has no further comment but will provide updates if developments arise that are of public interest.
