Barrow is set to take another major step towards transforming its town centre after Team Barrow announced an initial £22.9 million investment in the next phase of the Heart of Barrow programme.
The partnership between central government, Westmorland and Furness Council and BAE Systems has agreed the funding as part of a wider long term plan to regenerate the town. Here are five key takeaways from the announcement. 1. Almost £23m Will Fund The First Phase The initial investment of £22.9 million will support the first phase of the Heart of Barrow programme.
The funding will help deliver new cultural, community and public spaces while also supporting the development of longer term plans for the town centre.Further funding is expected to be requested once the full cost of the wider regeneration programme has been established. 2. A New Event Space And Market Village Are Planned
One of the most noticeable changes will be the creation of a large temporary event space, designed to provide a venue for festivals, performances and other activities. The Bigger Transformation Could Take A Decade The £22.9 million investment represents only the first stage of a much larger ambition.
The complete Heart of Barrow scheme could take up to 10 years to deliver, meaning residents are likely to see changes introduced gradually rather than all at once. The long term vision includes a new theatre, new homes, retail and commercial units, open spaces and car parking, creating a modern multi use town centre. 5. More Investment And A Development Partner Are Coming
The Team Barrow funding will also support the appointment of a development partner, further work on the town centre masterplan and progress on the land assembly strategy. Additional funding of £10.912 million from the Local Regeneration Fund and £1.560 million from Westmorland and Furness Council will also contribute towards the first phase.
