Cafe Owners Set to Lead Millom’s Flagship Old Bank Regeneration Project

29 Apr 2026 Cafe Owners Set to Lead Millom’s Flagship Old Bank Regeneration Project

A well-known café-owning couple from West Cumbria has been confirmed as the new operators of a major regeneration project in Millom.

Samantha and Andrew Bowden, who run the Sunset Beach Café at Sile croft, will take over the lease of The Old Bank, the former NatWest building located in Market Square.

The landmark project is part of the wider Millom Town Deal regeneration programme. The building is currently undergoing refurbishment and will be turned into a modern community hub designed to support local enterprise, creativity, and cultural activity.

Once completed, The Old Bank will offer a mix of facilities including food and drink services, office spaces, business units, and areas for exhibitions and retail displays. It is expected to provide new opportunities for local businesses, artists, and community groups to work, collaborate, and grow.

Cumberland Council confirmed the appointment, highlighting the Bowden's’ strong local ties and experience running a successful café business. Officials said their application demonstrated a clear vision for both the operation and long-term development of the site.

The project is part of a wider regeneration plan aimed at revitalising Millom town centre and supporting economic growth in the area. The Town Deal initiative is investing millions into improving infrastructure, community facilities, and opportunities for residents.

Community leaders have welcomed the progress, saying the appointment marks an important step toward bringing the long-derelict building back into productive use. Once open, it is expected to become a key destination within the town, helping to attract visitors and support local regeneration goals.

The Old Bank project is scheduled to move into its next stage ahead of its planned opening, with further works continuing to prepare the building for public use.
