Audi A6 sets the tone with style
Road Test: Audi A6 Plug-in Hybrid Impresses on a Cold Winter Evening
It’s 4pm, it’s cold, and darkness is already creeping in as I leave the comfort of home for a job miles away. Normally at this time I’d be settling down with my Aussie soaps before making tea. As a dedicated morning person, this would usually be the moment my mood dips.
But today, I’m anything but glum because I’m driving the new Audi A6.
This latest saloon from Audi doesn’t just offer a good driving experience; it delivers genuine joy behind the wheel, making me forget entirely that I’m heading out for night work. The sleek exterior design stands out immediately. The sharp lines, the distinctive new grille, and the striking rear lights especially impressive when illuminated give the car a modern, premium and sporty character. It’s unmistakably Audi, but fresh and full of presence.
Inside, the cabin is just as impressive. The dashboard is fully digital, with tactile touchscreens both for the driver and the front passenger. Audi’s haptic feedback system makes every tap feel deliberate and satisfying far more intuitive than many competing systems. The multi-way adjustable electric driver’s seat is both comfortable and supportive, and with the heating switched on, it offers the cosy warmth of a fireside armchair. Add in the ambient interior lighting and the excellent Bang & Olufsen sound system included in the Launch Edition, and the cabin feels more like a luxury lounge than a car.
After weeks of reminding my son about staying focused on college work rather than TikTok, I ironically lost track of time watching Neighbours and left later than planned. Fortunately, the A6 makes up for any lost minutes. The 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid engine, combined with quattro all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, provides impressive performance.
With petrol and electric power working together, the car produces 299PS and 450Nm of torque. The 0–62mph time is just six seconds, and there’s plenty of strong mid-range pull for fast cross-country driving. When fully charged, the A6 offers up to 60 miles of pure-electric driving, helping to push fuel economy figures to a remarkable 113mpg. Once the battery is depleted, consumption drops to around 40mpg though I did manage to squeeze out 44mpg at one point.
On the road, handling is superb. The quattro system and four-wheel steering give the A6 outstanding grip and poise, even in wet and dirty winter conditions. The seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox shifts quickly and smoothly, and the sharp steering makes the car feel agile and confidence-inspiring. It’s genuinely fun, sporty, and incredibly refined.
Almost before I realise it, I’m at my destination on the opposite coast, ready for the night’s work and already looking forward to the drive home. By 7pm, The Archers is filling the cabin through the B&O speakers, the heated seat is warming me through, and the brilliant headlights are turning the dark road ahead almost daylight-bright.
By the time I arrive back home, I’m glowing not just from the heated seats but from the simple pleasure of a fantastic drive. This Audi elevated what could have been a dreary evening into something genuinely enjoyable.
