Walker Rescued After 100‑Metre Fall on Lake District Mountain
The incident took place on Friday, January 30, at around 4.37 pm on Brown Cove Crags on the western side of Helvellyn, one of England’s most challenging peaks. Keswick Mountain Rescue and Patterdale Mountain Rescue teams were called to assist.
The injured walker, who had been climbing with a friend, slipped and was unable to arrest his fall with his ice axe. His companion raised the alarm and reached him at the base of the crag, finding him conscious but in severe pain.
Rescuers sheltered the casualty in a bothy bag while working to reach him. A Coast Guard helicopter crew was also called, but could only assist once conditions improved and the rescue team brought the walker to a lower point.
After being strapped to a stretcher and carried down by the mountain team, the walker was winched into the helicopter and flown to waiting medics. He was then taken by air ambulance to hospital in Preston for further treatment.
The operation involved around 26 volunteer mountain rescuers and took several hours to safely bring him to help.
