Viral Claim About Kim Jong un “Killing Anyone Who Attempts Suicide and Fails” Proven Completely False

Viral Claim About Kim Jong un “Killing Anyone Who Attempts Suicide and Fails” Proven Completely False

The misleading claim emerged shortly after credible reports revealed that Kim Jong un had issued a secret order banning suicide, calling it “treason against socialism,” amid a sharp rise in suicide rates across North Korea. But the leap to an execution policy is pure fiction.
According to a Reuters fact check, the article at the centre of the rumour was filled with blatantly false statements including a bizarre claim that Kim Jong un delivered his speech after “riding in on a white unicorn.” Fact checkers labelled the story as fabricated, and no reputable news outlet has reported anything remotely similar to the execution claim.
The false Yadu News Nation article also included outlandish claims that those contemplating suicide would be “relocated to a reeducation camp until they die an honourable death from starvation, exposure or torture.” Again, none of this is supported by evidence or credible reporting.
The Indian newspaper Pragativadi had republished the Yadu News Nation article on June 20, but removed it after inquiries from Reuters. The original article is no longer available on their website or social channels, though an archived version remains viewable through the Internet Archive.
Fact checking organisations, including Check Your Fact, have found no reliable sources indicating that North Korea executes people for failed suicide attempts. The circulating claim is simply another example of how sensational misinformation can spread rapidly online especially when tied to a secretive regime.
While genuine concerns remain about North Korea’s rising suicide rates and harsh government control, this particular rumour belongs firmly in the realm of internet fiction, not fact.
