Twin Powerful Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela, Dozens Dead and Hundreds Injured

25 Jun 2026 Twin Powerful Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela, Dozens Dead and Hundreds Injured

Venezuela has declared a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within less than a minute, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured, according to government officials. Rescue operations remain underway amid fears that the death toll could rise significantly in the coming days.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, hit northern Venezuela on the evening of June 24. The stronger quake struck near the Caribbean coastal region west of Caracas just seconds after the first tremor, creating what seismologists described as a rare and destructive “doublet” earthquake event.

The powerful shocks caused extensive damage in the capital, Caracas, and nearby states including La Guaira. Buildings collapsed, roads were damaged, communications were disrupted, and thousands of residents fled into the streets in panic as aftershocks continued to rattle the region. Emergency crews worked through the night searching through piles of rubble for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a nationwide state of emergency and warned that casualty figures remain preliminary. Authorities reported that hospitals were overwhelmed with injured residents while schools were closed and emergency personnel were mobilized across the country.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquakes were among the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century. Preliminary modelling suggested the disaster could ultimately result in a much higher death toll depending on the extent of structural damage and the number of people trapped in affected areas.

Reports indicate that several critical infrastructure systems, including power and communications networks, were disrupted. Authorities also temporarily closed the country’s main international airport while engineers assessed potential damage to facilities and transport links.

International offers of assistance began arriving shortly after the disaster. Governments and humanitarian organizations from across the region and beyond pledged support, including search-and-rescue teams, medical supplies, and emergency aid for affected communities.

Residents described scenes of chaos as buildings shook violently and people rushed outdoors seeking safety. Many spent the night outside their homes, fearing additional aftershocks. Families across the affected regions continue searching for missing relatives as rescue teams race against time to locate survivors.

The disaster marks one of Venezuela’s most significant seismic events in recent history and presents a major challenge for emergency responders already working under difficult conditions. Authorities have pledged to continue rescue efforts and provide assistance to communities impacted by the catastrophe.
