Tsunami warning issued after 7.6 magnitude earthquake off Japan

Locals have been urged to evacuate after a tsunami warning was issued following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan.
The quake was detected near the northeastern regions of Aomori and Hokkaido, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Warnings have been issued for waves of up to three metres.
The United States Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.6. Sky News reported that quakes of this strength are rare and are considered capable of causing widespread damage, major destruction and loss of life.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said hazardous tsunami waves could affect coastlines within 1,000 kilometres of the epicentre, including parts of Japan and Russia. The epicentre was around 80 kilometres off Japan’s coast.
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said nuclear power plants in affected regions were carrying out safety checks. Metro reported that residents in at-risk areas have been told to evacuate as quickly as possible.
