Teenager Drowned in Lake District Tarn After Swimming Incident
A 17-year-old teenager has died after drowning in a Lake District tarn following a swimming incident with friends, an inquest has heard.
Absi Ahmed Mohammad, from Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, died at High Dam Tarn near Fins Thwaite, close to the southern end of Windermere, on April 7, 2026.
The inquest at Cumbria Coroner’s Court was told that emergency services were called shortly after 12:30pm after reports that someone was in difficulty in the water. A large-scale rescue operation was launched involving police, fire and rescue teams, ambulance services, the Coastguard, and mountain rescue volunteers.
Absi reportedly got into difficulty while swimming and disappeared beneath the surface. His body was later recovered by professional divers after an extensive search.
Authorities confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A provisional cause of death was given as drowning following post-mortem examination.
Assistant Coroner Dr Nicholas Shaw stated that the circumstances were “clearly a tragic and unnatural death,” and confirmed that a full inquest will continue at a later date to establish the full details of the incident.
Tributes have since been paid to the teenager, described by friends and family as a bright and kind young man with a promising future ahead.
