Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Kills at Least 19 in Southern Philippines

08 Jun 2026 Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Kills at Least 19 in Southern Philippines

A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines early Monday, leaving at least 19 people dead and more than 200 injured as authorities launched large-scale rescue and relief operations.

The earthquake's epicentre was located offshore near Sarangani Province, sending powerful tremors across Mindanao and causing widespread panic. Several buildings collapsed, roads were damaged, and power outages were reported in multiple communities. General Santos City was among the hardest-hit areas, with significant structural damage recorded throughout the city.

The quake also triggered a tsunami warning across parts of the Philippines and neighbouring countries, prompting residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground. Waves measuring up to one meter were reported in some locations before authorities later lifted the warning after determining the threat had largely passed.

Schools, homes, and public buildings suffered damage, while rescue teams searched for people feared trapped beneath debris. Emergency shelters were opened for displaced residents, and disaster-response units were deployed across affected provinces.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an immediate national response, directing government agencies, military personnel, and emergency workers to assist affected communities and assess the full extent of the destruction.

Authorities reported numerous aftershocks following the main quake, raising concerns about additional damage and complicating rescue efforts. Residents were advised to remain alert and avoid weakened structures as inspections continued.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, making the country highly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Officials warned that casualty figures and damage estimates could rise as assessments continue.
