Independent Probe Launched After Girls Injured by Runaway Police Van

24 Apr 2026 Independent Probe Launched After Girls Injured by Runaway Police Van

An independent investigation has been launched following a serious incident in which two girls were injured by a police vehicle in West Cumbria.

The incident happened on Senhouse Street in Maryport on the evening of April 18, when an unoccupied police van reportedly moved and struck a group of young people.

One of the girls suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to hospital, where she was described as being in a critical condition. The second girl sustained minor injuries and received treatment before being discharged.

Cumbria Police said officers were responding to a separate incident at the time. The case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has begun a formal investigation to establish exactly what happened.

The IOPC confirmed that it is gathering evidence and speaking with those involved, including the families of the injured girls. It added that the investigation will be carried out independently to ensure a full and fair assessment of the incident.

Authorities have asked any witnesses to come forward as inquiries continue.
