Much Loved Lake District Pony Mischief Dies After 19 Years Supporting Disabled Riders
Tributes have been paid to Mischief, a much-loved Lake District pony whose 19 years of helping disabled riders created lasting memories for hundreds of people.
The cob pony was part of Calvert Stables, operated by the Lake District Calvert Trust, where he supported riding and carriage-driving activities for people of different ages and abilities. He died peacefully surrounded by the stables team and veterinary professionals from Frame and Swift Ltd. His death has prompted an outpouring of appreciation from those who worked with him and the visitors whose experiences he helped make possible.
Mischief arrived at Calvert Stables in 2007 after being purchased for the centre by Keswick Lions. His care and sponsorship were also supported by the Friends of Calvert Trust (Lake District). Over nearly two decades, he became a familiar and valued member of the team, building a reputation for his lively personality and ability to bring enjoyment to people visiting the centre.
Although Mischief took part in riding sessions, carriage driving was his particular speciality. He helped wheelchair users experience the outdoors from a horse-drawn carriage, offering an accessible activity to people who might otherwise face barriers to traditional riding experiences. Through these sessions, he helped participants develop confidence and enjoy time outside in the Lake District countryside.
Louise Hogan, stables manager at Calvert Stables, described Mischief as a character with a strong sense of humour who regularly entertained those around him. She recalled that his name quickly proved appropriate after he arrived, when he would duck beneath the stable bar to reach the nearest patch of grass. His playful behaviour became part of the personality that made him so memorable to staff and visitors.
Hogan also highlighted the confidence Mischief helped people develop through carriage driving. She said he had enabled countless participants to take part in the activity and that his absence would leave a significant gap in the stables team. Her tribute reflected the close relationship built between the pony, the people who cared for him and the visitors who benefited from his work.
Calvert Stables is an approved centre for both the British Horse Society and the Riding for the Disabled Association. It provides accessible horse riding and carriage-driving opportunities for people with a wide range of abilities. The stables form part of the wider Lake District Calvert Trust, which offers outdoor activities and experiences designed to help people with disabilities enjoy adventure, independence and achievement.
The stables team has thanked everyone who helped care for Mischief, sponsored him, rode with him or spent time alongside him throughout his life at the centre. His contribution extended beyond the activities themselves, helping visitors build confidence and enjoy experiences that might otherwise have been difficult to access. His memory is expected to remain an important part of the centre's story.
