Innovative Wet Farming Trial Launched in Cumbria

29 Apr 2026 Innovative Wet Farming Trial Launched in Cumbria

A Cumbrian estate has introduced a ground-breaking agricultural approach that could reshape land use across the region by turning traditionally unproductive wet areas into valuable farmland.

The initiative, taking place at Holker Estate, focuses on pluviculture a method of farming that works with naturally wet conditions rather than draining the land. This “wetter farming” approach allows crops to grow in waterlogged soil, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional agriculture.

The project is being led by pluviculture manager David Harvey, who highlighted the benefits of embracing wet environments instead of trying to alter them. By maintaining high water levels, the method helps protect soil quality, enhance biodiversity, and support productive farming.

As part of the trial, the estate is cultivating Typha, a plant that thrives in wet conditions and produces natural fibres used in eco-friendly materials such as insulation and textiles.

The approach also contributes to climate efforts by preserving carbon stored in peat soils, reducing emissions that would otherwise occur if the land were drained.

In a first for the county, the initial crop was planted using drone technology earlier this year, highlighting the project’s innovative nature. The initiative has already gained national attention and was recently featured on BBC Radio 4.

Further details about the project are expected to be shared with the public during upcoming events at Holker Hall, where experts will discuss the future of sustainable farming.
