Students Rescued After Tents Collapse During Lake District Camping Trip

26 May 2026 Students Rescued After Tents Collapse During Lake District Camping Trip

Four students camping in the Lake District were rescued after severe weather conditions caused their tents to collapse during the night, prompting an emergency call to mountain rescue teams.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at around 1.50am after the young campers, who had been staying near Saddlestone Quarries below Coniston Old Man, dialled 999 for help. According to rescuers, the group became stranded when high winds and heavy rain battered their campsite, leaving them unable to safely make their own way down the mountain.

Emergency crews quickly deployed vehicles to the area before rescue members continued on foot to reach the campers. Upon arrival, the team provided the students with warm drinks and dry clothing to protect them from the cold and wet conditions.

Rescuers then helped pack away the damaged camping equipment before escorting the group safely down to waiting vehicles. Once back at the rescue base, the students were offered additional refreshments while arrangements were made for parents to collect them.

The entire rescue operation lasted nearly five hours, highlighting the dangers sudden weather changes can pose in the Lake District, particularly for inexperienced campers and hikers.

Mountain rescue teams regularly warn visitors to check weather forecasts carefully and ensure they are fully prepared before camping or hiking in remote areas. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rapidly changing conditions are common across the region, especially in elevated areas around the fells.

Officials praised the students for contacting emergency services quickly, saying the decision helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious.
