Serious Crash Forces Closure of A686 in Both Directions
The A686 was closed in both directions on Saturday following a serious road traffic crash in Cumbria, causing disruption for motorists travelling through the North Pennines region.
According to local reports, the closure affected the stretch of road between Tortree Gardens in Melmerby and Park Lane in Alston. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 3:20pm after reports of a significant collision.
Police, paramedics, and fire crews attended the incident, while the Great North Air Ambulance was also understood to be assisting at the scene. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the number of vehicles involved or whether there were any injuries or fatalities.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while emergency teams carried out rescue operations and investigations. Despite the closure, traffic in surrounding areas was reported to be moving steadily.
The A686 is known as one of England’s most scenic and challenging roads, running through the Pennines between Cumbria and Northumberland. Due to its winding sections and elevated terrain, the route has previously seen several serious accidents, especially during periods of heavy traffic or poor weather conditions.
Officials are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue and the road remains under assessment for public safety.
