Multiple People Seriously Injured Following Major Crash on A591 Near Thirlmere

29 May 2026 Multiple People Seriously Injured Following Major Crash on A591 Near Thirlmere

A major emergency response was launched after a serious road traffic collision on the A591 near Thirlmere left multiple people injured and caused severe disruption for motorists travelling through the Lake District.

The crash happened on the busy stretch of road between Wythburn and Thirlspot, close to the Thirlmere reservoir, with police, paramedics and fire crews called to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Authorities quickly closed the road in both directions while emergency teams worked to treat casualties and secure the area.

Reports indicate that several people suffered serious injuries in the collision, although officials have not yet confirmed the full extent of those injuries or the number of vehicles involved. Ambulance crews provided treatment at the roadside before casualties were transported to hospital for further care.

The closure of the A591 caused long traffic delays across surrounding areas, with drivers urged to avoid the route and seek alternative journeys while recovery and investigation work continued. The A591 is one of the Lake District’s main transport routes and is heavily used by residents, tourists and commercial traffic travelling between Kendal, Windermere and Keswick.

Cumbria Police issued appeals for motorists to stay away from the area while emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the incident. Officers also began inquiries into the cause of the crash, including gathering witness statements and reviewing any available dashcam footage.

The collision once again highlights ongoing concerns over safety along sections of the A591 near Thirlmere, where local campaigners and residents have previously warned about rising accident numbers and dangerous driving conditions. Historical accident data has shown an increase in crashes along the route in recent years, with campaigners describing the situation as “alarming.”

Emergency road closures on the A591 often have a major impact across Cumbria due to the route’s importance as one of the main gateways into the central Lake District. Traffic disruption following serious incidents can stretch for miles, particularly during busy tourism periods and holiday seasons.

Police have not yet released further information regarding the identities or conditions of those injured, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have relevant footage is expected to be asked to contact Cumbria Police as inquiries continue.
