Mountain Biker Injured in Grizedale Forest Rescue Operation

05 Jun 2026 Mountain Biker Injured in Grizedale Forest Rescue Operation

A woman was rescued from Grizedale Forest in Cumbria after being injured in a mountain biking accident on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on June 4 when the cyclist reportedly fell from her bike while riding in the popular forest trail network. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 11 a.m., and members of the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the scene following a request for assistance from Cumbria Police.

Rescuers faced difficult conditions as heavy rain and strong winds swept across the area. However, the team was able to use forest access tracks to reach the injured rider quickly. According to rescue officials, the woman was part of a group of cyclists who helped shield her from the harsh weather while awaiting emergency assistance.

Once on scene, mountain rescue volunteers erected a temporary shelter and provided additional warmth to protect the casualty from the cold and wet conditions. A medical assessment revealed injuries to her neck, upper arm, and shoulder. She was treated at the scene and given pain relief while awaiting further medical support.

Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service later arrived and took over the woman's care. She was subsequently transported to Furness General Hospital in Barrow for further examination and treatment.

Rescue officials praised the actions of the cyclist's companions, whose efforts helped keep her safe and comfortable before emergency teams arrived. The incident also highlighted the importance of preparedness and teamwork when participating in outdoor activities, particularly during periods of poor weather.

Grizedale Forest, located in the Lake District, is a popular destination for mountain bikers, attracting riders from across the region with its extensive network of trails and challenging terrain. While the routes offer a rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts, changing weather conditions and difficult ground can increase the risk of accidents.

The rescue operation concluded successfully, with emergency crews ensuring the injured cyclist received prompt medical attention despite the adverse conditions.
