Major Three Vehicle Collision Shuts Down A689 in Both Directions

28 May 2026 Major Three Vehicle Collision Shuts Down A689 in Both Directions

A major road in Cumbria was closed in both directions following a serious crash involving three vehicles on Thursday morning.

The collision occurred on the A689 at around 9:20am, prompting a rapid response from emergency services, including police, paramedics, and traffic officers. Authorities immediately shut the road in both directions to allow crews to deal with the incident safely and manage heavy traffic in the surrounding area.

According to police, the closure stretches between Junction 44 and Houghton and is expected to remain in place for several hours while investigations and recovery work continue.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as long delays quickly built up on nearby roads. Traffic disruption was reported throughout the morning, affecting commuters, delivery services, and local residents.

Cumbria Police confirmed that officers remain at the scene and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash. However, details regarding injuries or the condition of those involved have not yet been officially released.

Witnesses described seeing emergency vehicles rushing to the area shortly after the accident happened. Recovery teams were also called in to remove damaged vehicles and clear debris from the roadway.

The incident once again highlights concern about road safety on busy regional routes, particularly during peak travel hours when traffic volumes are high.

Motorists are being urged to follow updates from local authorities and traffic services before travelling through the area.

Police said further information will be released once enquiries progress and the road is considered safe to reopen.
