Lake District Climber Airlifted to Hospital After Six Metre Fall

15 Jun 2026 Lake District Climber Airlifted to Hospital After Six Metre Fall

A climber was taken to hospital after suffering injuries in a fall on a Lake District climbing route, leading to a major rescue operation involving mountain rescue personnel and an emergency helicopter.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to Raven Crag on Glaramara shortly after midday on June 12 following reports that a climber had fallen around six metres during the first pitch of the route known as Corvus. The casualty landed on a ledge and sustained a back injury. A separate climbing party waiting to begin the route alerted emergency services.

Rescuers requested assistance from a Coastguard helicopter based in Carlisle. After assessing the scene, crews determined that weather and terrain conditions prevented a direct winch extraction of the injured climber. Instead, the helicopter transported rescue personnel and specialist rigging equipment to the top of the crag to support the operation.

A mountain rescue team member was lowered down to reach the casualty. The climber was carefully secured in a vacuum mattress before being lowered to a medical team waiting at the base of the cliff. Following treatment and pain relief, the injured man was transported by stretcher to a nearby landing area, where the helicopter was able to airlift him to hospital for further care.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders in the Lake District’s rugged terrain, where difficult access and changing conditions can complicate rescue efforts. Mountain rescue teams have once again urged climbers and walkers to prepare thoroughly before heading into the fells and to remain aware of the risks associated with outdoor adventure activities.
