Five Rescued After Paddleboarding Incident on Derwentwater

04 May 2026 Five Rescued After Paddleboarding Incident on Derwentwater

A major emergency response was launched in England’s Lake District after five people got into difficulty while paddleboarding on Derwentwater.

Rescue teams were called to the scene at around 8:05pm on April 28 after the group, spread across two paddleboards, was pushed into the middle of the lake by strong winds.

According to rescuers, the situation became increasingly dangerous as the individuals were not equipped with wetsuits or buoyancy aids, and at least two had fallen into the water.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including mountain rescue, fire services, police, and ambulance crews. While teams were mobilizing, the group managed to make their way back to shore.

They were later checked for signs of cold-water shock before being safely returned to their starting point.

Rescue officials used the incident to warn about the rapidly changing conditions on lakes and stressed the importance of wearing proper safety equipment, particularly flotation devices, when venturing onto open water.
