A66 Shut in Both Directions Following Serious Two-Vehicle Collision in Cumbria
A significant stretch of the A66 was closed in both directions early Saturday morning after a serious road traffic collision involving two vehicles.
The incident occurred on the A66 between the A5086 near Cockermouth and the A591 near Keswick. Emergency responders, including police officers and traffic management teams, attended the scene shortly after reports of the crash were received at around 5 a.m.
Authorities closed the road in both directions to allow emergency services to assist those involved and to enable specialist collision investigators to examine the scene. The closure resulted in major disruption for motorists travelling through the area, with diversion routes established to manage traffic flow.
National Highways confirmed that contractors were deployed to support traffic management efforts while police carried out investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials warned that the road could remain closed for several hours due to the complexity of the investigation and recovery operation.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area where possible and allow extra travel time for journeys across Cumbria. No further details regarding injuries or the condition of those involved had been released at the time of publication. The investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.
