US Carries Out Limited Strikes On Iran’s Strategic Qeshm Island

03 Nov 2026 US Carries Out Limited Strikes On Iran’s Strategic Qeshm Island

The United States has carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, raising fresh concerns about tensions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Three US officials described Monday’s operation as defensive, saying it was intended to protect American assets in the region. One official said the action followed Iranian fire directed at a US aircraft, while another said the strikes targeted Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets. The operation was described as limited rather than a return to large-scale combat.

Iranian state media reported several explosions on Qeshm Island on 2 November. The reports emerged after the United States carried out the operation, although Washington did not immediately provide a detailed public account. The Pentagon referred questions to US Central Command, which oversees American military operations in the Middle East. Central Command did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The strikes took place shortly before the US midterm elections, at a time when the Trump administration has been balancing military pressure against efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict. The operation also followed earlier public statements from President Donald Trump indicating that the United States would not launch further attacks on Iran before the elections.

Qeshm is Iran’s largest island and occupies a strategic position near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world's most important routes for international energy shipments, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Disruption to shipping through the strait has affected commercial traffic and increased concerns about the security of global oil supplies.

The latest military action is understood to be part of a series of limited US operations against Iranian targets in recent weeks. Reports indicate that some of these actions were not publicly announced, with officials describing them as efforts to reduce threats to American forces and commercial shipping. The reported approach has allowed Washington to respond militarily while avoiding an official declaration of a wider renewed campaign.

Despite the strikes, diplomatic efforts between the two countries have continued. Vice President JD Vance said Washington and Tehran had made progress towards finding a way to end the conflict. He also indicated that the administration remained cautiously optimistic about the possibility of reaching an agreement, while acknowledging that the situation remained unpredictable.

Trump also suggested that a diplomatic agreement could still be possible, while playing down the scale of recent military activity. The president said there had been little fighting in recent months and indicated that further military action could depend on whether negotiations produced an agreement. His comments came as international efforts continued to reduce tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest strikes underline the uncertainty surrounding the conflict, with military operations continuing alongside diplomatic discussions. Any further escalation could affect regional security and international shipping, particularly given the importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global energy supplies. For now, the United States has described the Qeshm operation as a limited defensive action rather than the beginning of a wider offensive.
