Manchester Airport Records UK’s Highest Rate of Long Flight Delays
Manchester Airport has been ranked among the UK’s worst airports for lengthy flight delays, with new research revealing that it recorded the highest rate of departures delayed by more than 60 minutes over a 12-month period.
According to research by air passenger rights company AirAdvisor, 7.73% of departures from Manchester Airport were delayed by more than an hour between September 2025 and October 2026.
Birmingham Airport followed with 7.16% of departures delayed by more than 60 minutes, while Bournemouth Airport recorded 6.99%. Southampton Airport ranked next, with 6.94% of flights experiencing similar delays.
The figures highlight the disruption that passengers can face when travelling through some of the country’s busiest airports.
Weather conditions, including strong winds and fog, can affect flight schedules. Other factors, such as air traffic control restrictions and operational difficulties, can also contribute to delays.
Manchester Airport has previously pointed to factors outside its direct control, including adverse weather and disruption to European air traffic control, when explaining its punctuality performance.
The research also identified airports with lower rates of lengthy delays. Cardiff Airport recorded the lowest rate among those included in the study, at 3.60%, followed by London Heathrow at 3.89%.
Passengers affected by significant delays should keep their airline informed of their options and check what assistance may be available under applicable passenger rights rules. Depending on the circumstances, travellers may be entitled to meals, refreshments or accommodation during extended disruptions.
The findings underline the importance of checking flight information before travelling and allowing extra time when making airport connections.
