Five-Week Road Closure Planned for Buttermere Avenue in Whitehaven
Motorists and residents in Whitehaven are being warned of disruption as repair work on Buttermere Avenue is set to resume, with a road closure planned for up to five weeks.
Cumberland Council has announced that work is due to restart on Monday, 2 November 2026, subject to suitable weather conditions. The project will continue improvements that began earlier this year, focusing on pavement reconstruction and repairs to damaged sections of the carriageway.
The planned closure will allow contractors to carry out the work safely and complete the repairs. The council has said the closure could remain in place for up to five weeks while the project is underway.
Pedestrians will be able to continue using the route throughout the works. Cyclists will also retain access provided they dismount and walk their bicycles through the affected area.
Access for residents will be maintained whenever it is safe and practical. However, people living along the affected road may need to follow instructions from the site team, and some journeys could be affected while construction activities are taking place.
Emergency service vehicles responding to urgent incidents will continue to have access during the closure. The arrangements are intended to ensure emergency crews can reach people who need assistance while allowing repair work to proceed.
Waste and recycling collections are also expected to continue as normal, provided it is safe for collection crews to operate. Residents should remain aware of any temporary restrictions that may affect access to properties during the works.
The project forms part of ongoing road and pavement maintenance in West Cumbria. Reconstructing damaged pavement sections and patching the road surface can help address deterioration and improve conditions for people using the route.
The start date and progress of the work remain dependent on weather conditions. Residents and road users are advised to plan ahead and allow for possible disruption while the closure is in place.
