Cumbrian Coast Rail Line to Close Between Whitehaven and Carlisle as Storm Boelo Approaches

24 Oct 2026 Cumbrian Coast Rail Line to Close Between Whitehaven and Carlisle as Storm Boelo Approaches

Rail passengers in Cumbria are being warned of travel disruption as Storm Boelo approaches, with the Cumbrian Coast line between Whitehaven and Carlisle set to close temporarily.

The northern section of the route will close from 9pm on Saturday, October 24, because of forecast high tides and strong winds. Northern has confirmed that no replacement bus services will operate during the closure, meaning passengers should arrange alternative travel if necessary.

Storm Boelo is expected to bring heavy rain and gale-force winds across north-west England and Scotland over the weekend. The severe weather could affect railway infrastructure, with the risk of flash flooding, fallen trees and debris obstructing tracks.

Network Rail teams are monitoring vulnerable locations and preparing to respond to weather-related incidents. However, officials have warned that short-notice cancellations and delays remain possible despite precautionary measures.

Ross Davies, Network Rail’s North West network operations director, urged passengers to check their journeys regularly before leaving home. He also appealed to residents living near railway lines to secure loose garden items, including furniture, fencing and trampolines, which could be blown onto the tracks and cause further disruption.

The impact is expected to extend beyond the Cumbrian Coast line. Services north of Carlisle may face speed restrictions, with some trains reduced or cancelled as operators respond to the storm.

Passengers are advised to consult National Rail Enquiries and their train operator’s live travel updates before travelling. Those planning journeys over the weekend should allow extra time and be prepared for changes to scheduled services.

Rail operators say checking the latest information before setting off will help passengers avoid unnecessary delays as Storm Boelo moves across the region.
