Barrow Coach Paul Crarey Insists Teenage Forward Stevie Watson Is Staying
Barrow Raiders head coach Paul Crarey has insisted teenage forward Stevie Watson is staying at the club, despite reported interest from Leeds Rhinos and another Super League side.
The 17-year-old prop had been linked with a move to Leeds following reports that the Super League club had secured his signature. However, Crarey moved quickly to reject the suggestion, confirming that Watson remains under contract with Barrow. He said there had been interest from Leeds and another Super League club but made clear the young forward was not leaving.
Crarey also revealed that Watson is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury which requires surgery. The operation is expected to keep him out of action for at least three months, meaning his immediate focus will be on recovery rather than a potential transfer.
Watson signed his first professional contract with Barrow ahead of the 2026 season after progressing through the club’s Furness Raiders Development Academy. His development has been part of the Raiders’ pathway for bringing local young players into the senior squad.
The situation highlights the role of Barrow’s development system in supporting young talent from the Furness area into professional rugby league. Crarey has previously praised the academy pathway, describing the development of local prospects as an important part of building the club’s future without relying on the larger budgets available to some rivals.
