US Prepares for Possible Major Strikes on Iran as Trump Weighs Next Move

26 Oct 2026 US Prepares for Possible Major Strikes on Iran as Trump Weighs Next Move

The United States military is preparing for the possibility of renewed major operations against Iran, with American forces in the Middle East reportedly ready to act within 96 hours if President Donald Trump gives the order.

According to CNN, citing US officials, the Pentagon and US Central Command have developed a range of military options that would extend beyond previous operations targeting Iranian military assets.

Potential targets reportedly include energy infrastructure, military installations and facilities associated with Iran’s nuclear programme. Officials have described the proposed campaign as a significant operation, although the precise scope and timing remain uncertain.

Despite the military preparations, Trump has not made a final decision on whether to authorise further attacks. Reports indicate that a major operation could take place after the US midterm elections in November, although the administration has not confirmed a timetable.

The developments come amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Israel also reportedly pressing for further military action against Iran.

According to officials cited by CNN, the Trump administration has asked Israel to delay additional strikes while the United States considers its own plans and the possibility of coordinated operations.

The discussions come as regional security concerns remain high, particularly over the potential consequences of renewed fighting for American personnel, Israel and neighbouring countries.

US intelligence assessments reportedly indicate that Iran and allied Houthi forces could retaliate if American or Israeli forces launch new attacks.

Such a response could threaten US personnel and facilities across the Middle East and further destabilise an already tense regional situation. The possibility of renewed military action has also raised concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for international energy supplies. Any further disruption could have wider consequences for global trade and oil markets.

The White House has not confirmed whether Trump intends to authorise another military campaign against Iran.

A senior Pentagon official told CNN that the department prepares military options for different scenarios and carries out operations when directed by the president and senior leadership.

For now, the situation remains uncertain as Washington weighs its military options alongside the possibility of diplomatic progress.

Any decision to resume large-scale attacks could have significant implications for regional security, international energy markets and relations between the United States, Iran and its allies.
