Workington Volunteer Celebrates 50 Years of Dedication to RNLI at Age 84

21 Oct 2026 Workington Volunteer Celebrates 50 Years of Dedication to RNLI at Age 84

An 84 year old volunteer from Workington has been honoured for 50 years of dedicated service to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), recognising her longstanding commitment to supporting the charity’s lifesaving mission.

Joan Kirkwood McDowell has been involved with the Workington and Whitehaven RNLI branch committee since 1975. Throughout her five decades of service, she has taken on various responsibilities, including serving as chair and secretary on several occasions.

Reflecting on her time with the organisation, Joan said one of her favourite activities has been collecting soft toys for fundraising tombolas, carefully washing and sanitising them before preparing them for new owners.

Her involvement with the RNLI also holds special personal significance. Her late husband, Alan, served as a coxswain at Workington RNLI from 1967 to 1972. The couple shared a passion for supporting the charity and regularly raised funds together using collection buckets at Whitehaven Marina.

Joan's contribution to the local community extends beyond her RNLI volunteering. In 2004, she became Mayor of Workington, following in the footsteps of her mother, who held the same position in 1984.

During her mayoral year, Joan selected the RNLI and the Parkinson's Disease Society as her chosen charities. She explained that supporting the latter was particularly meaningful because her husband had Parkinson's disease.

Her dedication has continued through decades of fundraising activities, helping provide essential financial support for lifeboat crews and their equipment. A spokesperson for the Workington and Whitehaven fundraising team described Joan as a much-loved and respected member of the branch, highlighting her commitment, enthusiasm and generosity.

The team said her remarkable contribution deserved recognition and expressed gratitude for everything she had achieved and continued to do for the organisation. Dani Beckett, RNLI community manager in Cumbria, also praised Joan's extraordinary dedication, noting that volunteers like her help raise the vital funds needed to train and equip lifeboat crews and lifeguards.

The RNLI relies heavily on donations and volunteer fundraising to maintain its lifesaving services around the UK and Ireland.

Joan's 50-year milestone stands as a testament to the lasting impact of community volunteering and the people who dedicate their time to helping save lives at sea.
