Whitehaven’s West Pier Remains Closed As Crews Plan Recovery Of Storm-Damaged Cable
Whitehaven’s West Pier will remain closed to the public while specialist teams prepare to recover a heavy power cable damaged during Storm Boelo.
Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners said the cable, which weighs between 1.5 and two tonnes, was torn from its position during the storm. The exposed equipment presents a significant safety hazard, particularly as darker evenings increase the risks for anyone attempting to enter the restricted area.
The commissioners have expressed concern that some members of the public continue to ignore the closure signs. They said younger harbour users have largely respected the restrictions, but most people who have entered the closed area have been adults.
Officials have urged everyone to follow the warning signs and stay away from the pier until the necessary recovery and safety work has been completed.
Restoring electricity to the West Pier Lighthouse is another priority for the harbour authority. The lighthouse provides an official navigational aid for vessels using Whitehaven Harbour, and commissioners said relying on generators or batteries would not be a practical or affordable long-term solution.
Initial testing suggests the damaged cable could potentially be recovered and reused as a temporary measure, provided it passes the required safety checks. This could help restore power to the lighthouse while arrangements are made to install a permanent replacement.
However, the recovery operation will require specialist lifting equipment, careful planning and suitable working conditions. The commissioners have warned that rushing the process could cause further damage or put workers and members of the public at risk.
The authority explained that even if the existing cable can be safely recovered and used again temporarily, West Pier will need to close once more when the permanent replacement is installed. This means the public should not expect the initial recovery work to mark the end of all disruption.
Storm Boelo caused damage to the harbour's infrastructure during late October, including the failure of the West Pier Lighthouse navigation beacon. The harbour authority previously confirmed that pedestrian access had been suspended because of the damage and associated public safety concerns.
No confirmed reopening date has been announced. Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners have stressed that public safety remains their priority and are asking residents and visitors to respect the restrictions until the cable has been dealt with and the pier is declared safe.
