Vintage Cars To Tackle Steep Slopes Of Iconic Honister Pass In Lake District
Vintage sports cars are preparing to take on the challenging slopes of Honister Pass as a popular historic motoring event returns to the Lake District.
The 2026 Lakeland Vintage Car Rally is scheduled for Saturday, 7 November, with the Vintage Sports-Car Club organising the event. Drivers will bring classic vehicles to the area for a demanding motoring trial, testing their skills on steep climbs and difficult surfaces around Honister. The event is expected to attract motoring enthusiasts and visitors keen to see historic vehicles tackle the challenging Lakeland landscape.
Honister Pass is among Cumbria’s highest and most challenging roads, with steep gradients and winding sections. The route presents particular difficulties for older vehicles, which must negotiate the climb while dealing with uneven road surfaces and changing conditions. The surrounding scenery, with its rugged fells and open countryside, provides a distinctive setting for the annual motoring challenge.
The event has a long association with the area and the Vintage Sports-Car Club’s Lakeland trials. Previous editions have featured pre-war vehicles, including cars dating from the 1920s and 1930s. The trials test drivers’ ability to make progress over steep and rough sections without stopping or striking course markers, making vehicle control and driving technique central to the competition.
Honister Slate Mine will provide the official spectator area for the 2026 event, allowing visitors to watch the action from a designated location. Organisers say this is the only official viewing point where spectators can safely observe the cars tackling the challenging sections. Visitors are advised to use the designated area rather than attempting to watch from unsuitable locations along the pass.
The event is free to attend, although parking charges apply. Visitors are required to purchase a parking ticket from the Honister Slate Shop and display it in their vehicles. The site's Bait Cabin Café is also expected to be open, serving breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and hot drinks throughout the day.
Honister Slate Mine is also inviting visitors to explore its slate shop, mine tours and adventure activities during their visit. The site is home to England’s last working slate mine and offers opportunities to learn more about the area's industrial heritage. The rally therefore provides an opportunity to combine historic motorsport with a visit to one of the Lake District's distinctive working heritage sites.
The Lakeland Vintage Car Rally forms part of the wider tradition of historic motoring events in Cumbria, where challenging roads and mountain scenery provide a natural setting for driving trials. Its return to Honister is expected to offer spectators an opportunity to see classic engineering tested in demanding conditions, with the steep climbs providing the main attraction.
