Storm Boelo Causes Second Day of Rail Disruption in Cumbria

27 Oct 2026 Storm Boelo Causes Second Day of Rail Disruption in Cumbria

Rail services across Cumbria continued to face disruption following the impact of Storm Boelo, which brought severe weather to northern England over the weekend.

Heavy rainfall and powerful winds caused flooding on railway lines, brought trees and branches onto tracks, and damaged overhead electrical equipment. Network Rail teams worked through challenging conditions to inspect routes, clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure.

The disruption affected services operated by several rail companies, with some trains cancelled, others running to amended timetables and journey times extended.

Railway engineers were deployed across the North West to deal with storm-related problems and reopen affected routes as safely as possible.

Network Rail reported hundreds of weather-related incidents across the region during the storm, including flooded sections of track and fallen trees. Although many railway lines reopened, further disruption remained possible while repairs and safety inspections continued.

The Cumbrian Coast line was among the routes affected, with the section between Carlisle and Whitehaven closed during the storm because of high winds.

Passengers were advised to check their journeys before leaving home and allow additional time for travel. Some services could still face short-notice cancellations, delays or reduced speeds while railway operations returned to normal.

Travellers were encouraged to consult National Rail and their train operator’s latest updates for information about specific routes.

The storm's impact highlighted the challenges faced by railway operators during periods of severe weather, particularly when flooding and strong winds affect essential infrastructure.

Network Rail and train operators continued working to restore services and minimise further disruption as conditions improved.
