Overnight Closure Planned for M6 Junction 36 Northbound Exit Slip Road
Drivers travelling on the M6 in South Cumbria are being advised to plan ahead as the northbound exit slip road at Junction 36 is set to close overnight for safety improvement work.
The closure is scheduled for Monday, 2 November 2026, running from 8pm until 6am on Tuesday morning. It will affect motorists intending to leave the northbound carriageway at Junction 36, near Kendal.
The work forms part of a wider National Highways project to replace the central reservation safety barrier between Junctions 35 and 36, near Burton-in-Kendal. The scheme began on 14 September and is currently scheduled to continue until 11 December 2026.
As part of the longer-term project, lane three closures are being used in both directions, alongside a temporary 40mph speed restriction. These measures are intended to provide a safer working environment for contractors while the barrier replacement is carried out.
A signed local diversion will be provided for drivers affected by the overnight closure. Motorists should follow the temporary road signs and allow additional time for their journeys.
The closure is limited to the northbound exit slip road at Junction 36, rather than a full closure of the M6. Drivers continuing northbound along the motorway should therefore check the latest traffic information before travelling.
National Highways has warned that planned roadworks can change because of adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances. Road users are encouraged to check the latest closure information before setting off, particularly if travelling during the overnight period.
The safety barrier replacement is part of ongoing maintenance work designed to improve protection for motorists using this busy section of the motorway. Drivers are being asked to observe temporary speed limits and follow all traffic management arrangements while the project continues.
