O2 Launches Next Generation 5G+ Network Across Cumbria, Reaching 219,000 People
Residents and businesses across Cumbria are set to benefit from improved mobile connectivity following the launch of O2’s next-generation 5G+ network in the region.
The service, announced on October 21, 2026, is expected to reach more than 219,000 people across several towns and communities. The rollout includes Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Workington and Ulverston, alongside other locations throughout the county.
The new 5G+ technology, also known as 5G Standalone, operates on dedicated 5G infrastructure rather than relying on older 4G technology to support its core network. According to O2, this approach can deliver faster data speeds, more reliable connections and lower latency, meaning less delay when information travels between devices and the network.
The improvements could benefit people using mobile services for everyday activities, including video calls, online work, streaming, navigation and accessing digital services. Local businesses may also benefit from more dependable connectivity for communication, customer service and other online operations.
O2 says the towns and cities included in the programme have at least 90 per cent outdoor 5G+ coverage. However, actual signal strength and availability can vary depending on location, buildings, landscape and other environmental factors.
The Cumbria upgrade forms part of Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan for 2026. The wider programme aims to improve network capacity, coverage and reliability across the UK through infrastructure upgrades, new mobile masts, small cells and improvements to existing 4G and 5G services.
The investment is particularly relevant to rural areas such as Cumbria, where mountainous terrain and remote communities can make consistent mobile coverage more challenging.
Alongside its 5G+ expansion, O2 is also promoting its satellite-to-mobile service for eligible customers in areas where traditional mobile signals are unavailable. This provides an additional connectivity option in some harder-to-reach locations.
Eligible O2 customers can access 5G+ without paying an additional network fee, provided they have a compatible device, an eligible plan and an up-to-date SIM. Some customers may need to update their SIM or switch to an eSIM.
