03 Nov 2026 Much-Loved Former Workington Teacher Pat Coyle Dies Aged 90

A much-loved former teacher from Workington has died at the age of 90, leaving behind fond memories among family, friends and former pupils.

Patricia Annie Carlyle Coyle, née McKay, passed away on Sunday, October 25.

Born and raised in Workington, Pat was the eldest of four sisters. During her younger years, she enjoyed spending time outdoors and regularly helped with crops and livestock at Schooses Farm, particularly enjoying being around horses.

She attended Workington Grammar School before continuing her education at a teacher training college in Leeds. In 1958, she married her childhood sweetheart, John Coyle. The couple shared more than 50 years of marriage.

Pat dedicated much of her working life to education, teaching at several schools across West Cumbria. She eventually retired from Ashfield Infant School in Workington in 1997, where she remained particularly fondly remembered.

Beyond teaching, Pat had a deep interest in history and was a long-standing member of the local history society. She devoted considerable time to researching the history of John Christian Curwen and Schoose Farm.

She was also remembered for keeping the traditional maypole dancing celebrations alive at school, helping create lasting memories for generations of children.

Away from education and history, Pat enjoyed quizzes and was a competitive member of several local teams, including those at The Commercial and The Hall Park.

Travel was another of her great passions, taking her on memorable trips to countries including the USA, Mexico, Peru, Egypt and China.

In later life, Pat was diagnosed with dementia and had to give up driving, something she found particularly difficult. However, she continued to enjoy life and treasured walking with her family, especially around Whitehaven Harbour and the shore hills of Workington.

Pat is survived by her three daughters, Tricia, Janice and Pamela, and her son, Johnathan.

She was especially proud of her daughter Janice's connection to the famous racehorse Desert Orchid, having worked for trainer David Elsworth.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be confirmed at a later date.
