Low Wood Bay’s Free Art Exhibition Showcases Northern Artists In Windermere

03 Nov 2026 Low Wood Bay’s Free Art Exhibition Showcases Northern Artists In Windermere

A free art exhibition programme at Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa is bringing paintings and creative work by Northern artists to visitors in Windermere.

The Art in the Atrium gallery was launched in 2023 through a partnership between English Lakes Hotels and Gavagan Art. Located in the resort’s spacious atrium, the exhibition space offers an informal setting where visitors can view fine art without paying an admission fee. The initiative aims to make regional and national artwork accessible to hotel guests, local residents and visitors to the Lake District.

Lancaster-based Gavagan Art works with artists from across the British Isles, with a particular focus on talent from Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Its partnership with Low Wood Bay has brought together a range of artists and creative practices through a changing programme of exhibitions. Previous displays have featured artists including Norman Adams RA, Kitty North, Norman Long, Anthony Frost, Sir Terry Frost RA and James Hake.

The latest exhibition features ceramics by Witherslack-based potter William Plumptre alongside paintings by North Yorkshire artist Tony Roberts. Plumptre trained in Japan under master potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka and is known for using local materials such as granite and wood ash in his ceramic glazes. Roberts presents landscapes, floral still-life paintings and other works in a variety of media, including oils and watercolours.

The display is part of the resort’s continuing effort to connect visitors with artists whose work reflects the landscapes and creative traditions of the North. The atrium provides a public-facing exhibition area within the hotel, with views towards Windermere and the surrounding fells. The current display is expected to remain open until early 2027.

Low Wood Bay is located on Ambleside Road, Windermere, and the Art in the Atrium exhibition is free to visit. Further information about the programme, current and previous exhibitors and future displays is available through the English Lakes Hotels website.
