Aspatria Hornets Strengthen League Lead With Impressive Victory At Hensingham
Aspatria Hornets maintained their impressive form in the Cumbria Men's League Division One by securing a deserved 40 26 victory over Hensingham A in challenging weather conditions.
The visitors made an explosive start to the match, taking the lead after just two minutes when Keanan Foster crossed for the opening try. Although Hensingham responded quickly with a try of their own, Aspatria soon took complete control of the first half with an impressive attacking display.
Further tries from Kris Beattie, Brad Thomson, Ben Tootill, and Jack Robinson helped the Hornets build a commanding 26 4 advantage by halftime. Tootill also added three successful conversions, giving the league leaders a comfortable cushion heading into the second half.
Aspatria extended their lead shortly after the restart when Foster claimed his second try of the afternoon. However, Hensingham refused to give up and produced an impressive comeback, scoring three unanswered tries to reduce the deficit to 30 20 and put pressure on the visitors with around twenty minutes remaining.
A scheduled hydration break proved to be a turning point. The pause allowed the Hornets to regroup before responding with two crucial tries from Jack Robinson and Brad Thomson, both completing personal doubles to seal another valuable victory. Hensingham added a late consolation try, but Aspatria remained comfortably in control until the final whistle.
Hensingham's tries came from Cohen Massey, who crossed twice, along with Corey Jay Turner, Luke Clements, and Lucas Roper. Clements also added three successful kicks in a spirited performance despite his side falling short against the league leaders.
The victory continues an outstanding campaign for Aspatria Hornets, who have established themselves as the team to beat in Division One. Their combination of disciplined defence, clinical finishing, and consistent performances has allowed them to remain at the summit of the league as the season enters a crucial stage.
