Armstrong Watson Increases Trainee Recruitment by 30 Per Cent Despite National Decline
A leading Cumbrian accountancy firm has expanded its trainee recruitment by 30 per cent, despite a decline in training contracts across the wider UK sector.
Armstrong Watson reported the increase over its latest reporting period, according to the Business & Accountancy Daily Top 75 Trainees Survey 2026. The survey found that the UK's largest accountancy firms had reduced their training contracts by 2.8 per cent, highlighting a contrasting recruitment trend within the profession.
The firm has also recorded significant growth in its school leaver apprenticeship programme over the past three years. Its annual intake of school leaver apprentices has almost doubled, rising from 17 in 2023 to 33 in 2026. The figures reflect the company's continued investment in developing new talent and creating routes into professional accountancy careers.
As part of its latest expansion, Armstrong Watson has introduced a new programme called Start Ahead. The initiative offers school leavers a route into accountancy and tax careers through a professional apprenticeship designed to combine practical workplace experience with internationally recognised qualifications.
The programme is structured at master's degree level, providing an alternative pathway for young people who want to enter professional careers without following the traditional university route.
Start Ahead is expected to welcome its first group of trainees in 2027. Applications are now open for positions at the firm's offices across Cumbria, giving prospective applicants an opportunity to explore careers in accountancy and taxation while gaining professional experience.
The programme builds on the company's existing apprenticeship schemes and its wider approach to recruiting and developing people at the beginning of their careers.
Armstrong Watson has also received national recognition for its apprenticeship programmes in recent years. It featured in the Department for Education's Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers rankings between 2022 and 2024, before appearing in The Sunday Times Top Apprenticeship Employers list in both 2025 and 2026.
The recognition reflects the firm's continued presence among employers investing in apprenticeship opportunities and professional development.
Paul Dickson, chief executive and managing partner at Armstrong Watson, welcomed the firm's performance in the latest national trainees survey. He said the business invested significantly in its trainees because their knowledge, skills and confidence were essential to the service provided to clients and the company's long-term success.
Dickson said the firm was seeing growing interest from school leavers seeking alternatives to traditional university education. He added that this demand was reflected in the continued expansion of its apprenticeship programmes, with Start Ahead intended to create further opportunities for young people to gain qualifications and valuable workplace experience.
He said the new initiative would help talented individuals establish rewarding careers while developing the professional skills needed in accountancy and tax. The firm believes combining structured learning with practical experience can provide school leavers with a strong foundation for long-term career development.
With its trainee intake increasing and applications open for the first Start Ahead cohort, Armstrong Watson is continuing to expand its early-career opportunities across Cumbria at a time when recruitment figures among the UK's largest accountancy firms are moving in the opposite direction.
