Cumbria Named England’s Second-Best County, Behind Devon

24 Oct 2026 Cumbria Named England’s Second-Best County, Behind Devon

Cumbria has been named the second-best county in England, finishing just behind Devon in a ranking that celebrates the country’s most attractive places to live and visit.

The ranking, published by The Telegraph, assessed England’s counties across a wide range of criteria, including natural landscapes, historical attractions, cultural amenities, luxury experiences and opportunities for peace and quiet.

Cumbria’s strong performance was largely driven by the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its lakes, mountains and picturesque valleys. The county is home to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, as well as extensive protected landscapes that attract visitors throughout the year.

Beyond the Lake District, Cumbria also benefits from a substantial coastline, historic landmarks, National Trust properties, English Heritage sites and a growing reputation for quality food and hospitality.

The assessment highlighted the county’s appeal to people seeking outdoor activities, peaceful surroundings and opportunities to explore England’s natural and cultural heritage.

However, Cumbria narrowly missed first place, with Devon taking the top position. Devon’s extensive coastline, beaches, national parks, museums and historic attractions helped it secure the overall lead.

The ranking considered 50 different criteria, grouped into four main categories: natural wonders, history and culture, luxuries, and peace and quiet. The expanded assessment also included factors such as golf courses, waterfalls, walking trails and crime rates.

Despite finishing second, Cumbria’s position reinforces its status as one of England’s leading destinations for tourism and outdoor recreation. Its combination of dramatic landscapes, historic towns and cultural attractions continues to make it popular with both domestic and international visitors.

The result offers further recognition for the county’s natural environment and the attractions that contribute to its enduring appeal.
