Minnesota Man Sentenced To Life For Politically Motivated Lawmaker Killings

24 Jul 2026 Minnesota Man Sentenced To Life For Politically Motivated Lawmaker Killings

A federal judge has sentenced Vance Boelter to two consecutive life sentences plus an additional 40 years in prison for the politically motivated killings of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, as well as the attempted murders of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman.

The sentencing comes more than a year after the attacks, which shocked the United States and intensified concerns about rising political violence. Prosecutors said Boelter disguised himself as a police officer before carrying out coordinated attacks on the homes of Democratic lawmakers during the early hours of June 14, 2025.

According to investigators, Boelter fatally shot Melissa and Mark Hortman at their home in Brooklyn Park after earlier shooting and seriously injuring Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their residence several miles away. Authorities later discovered a list containing dozens of public officials, leading investigators to conclude the attacks were carefully planned and politically motivated.

Boelter pleaded guilty in June to six federal charges, including murder and stalking, as part of an agreement that allowed him to avoid the death penalty. During Thursday's hearing, he briefly apologised to the victims and their families before receiving his sentence.

Family members of the victims delivered emotional impact statements during the sentencing. Melissa Hortman's daughter spoke about the devastating loss of both her parents, while Senator Hoffman and his wife described the lasting physical and emotional trauma caused by the attack.

Federal prosecutors argued that the crimes represented a direct attack on democratic institutions, describing the case as one of the most serious acts of political violence ever prosecuted by the office. They said the sentence ensures Boelter will spend the remainder of his life behind bars without the possibility of release.

Although the federal case has concluded, Boelter still faces separate state charges, including first degree murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors have indicated those proceedings could result in additional life sentences if he is convicted.
