Lancashire And South Cumbria Among England's Top 10 Areas For Prescription Spending

31 Oct 2026 Lancashire And South Cumbria Among England's Top 10 Areas For Prescription Spending

Lancashire and South Cumbria has been placed among England's 10 highest-spending NHS regions for prescription medicines, with figures showing an average cost of around £211 per person during the 2025/26 financial year.

The figures are based on NHS prescription-cost data, which measures the cost of medicines dispensed through community pharmacies and other dispensing services. Lancashire and South Cumbria recorded total prescription costs of approximately £377.5 million, covering a population of around 1.79 million people. The per-person calculation provides a way to compare spending between NHS areas of different sizes, although it does not necessarily indicate how much an individual patient spends on medication.

The data also highlights considerable differences in prescription spending across England. NHS areas have different population profiles, healthcare requirements and patterns of medicine use, all of which can influence the overall figures. The availability of specialist services and the types of treatments prescribed can also affect costs, meaning that higher expenditure does not automatically indicate unnecessary prescribing or greater medicine consumption.

National figures show that prescription medicines represent a substantial part of NHS expenditure. During 2025/26, approximately 1.30 billion prescription items were dispensed in the community across England, with a combined cost of around £11.6 billion. This represented an increase in both the number of items dispensed and the overall cost compared with the previous financial year.

The NHS Business Services Authority publishes prescribing and prescription-cost statistics to help monitor changes in medicine use and expenditure. These figures allow NHS organisations to examine regional differences, understand prescribing trends and assess how resources are being used across different communities.
