Storm Boelo to Bring Heavy Rain and Strong Coastal Winds to Cumbria

24 Oct 2026 Storm Boelo to Bring Heavy Rain and Strong Coastal Winds to Cumbria

Cumbria is bracing for a spell of severe weather as Storm Boelo brings heavy rain, powerful winds and potentially dangerous coastal conditions across the county.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for strong winds, with the most disruptive conditions expected from Saturday evening into Sunday. Gusts could reach 60–70mph across exposed areas, with some coastal locations potentially experiencing speeds of up to 80mph.

Heavy downpours are forecast across much of Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow, Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport and the Lake District. Coastal communities are expected to face particularly strong winds, while higher ground could experience colder conditions and persistent rainfall.

Silloth and Maryport are among the coastal locations forecast to experience powerful gusts. The combination of strong winds and high waves could create hazardous conditions along exposed beaches, promenades and coastal roads.

Residents and visitors are being warned to prepare for possible disruption to road, rail and ferry services. Strong winds could bring down trees, damage buildings and blow loose objects onto roads and railway tracks.

Rail passengers are also being advised to check their journeys before travelling, as cancellations and delays are possible. The Cumbrian Coast line between Whitehaven and Carlisle is scheduled to close temporarily from 9pm on Saturday because of high tides and strong winds.

Saturday is expected to bring widespread heavy rain and strengthening winds. Sunday will remain blustery and cooler, with scattered showers across the region.

Further heavy rain is forecast for Monday, accompanied by milder temperatures reaching around 15°C in some locations. Tuesday should bring a mixture of sunshine and showers, while conditions are expected to become drier and calmer on Wednesday as high pressure begins to build.

People are being urged to secure garden furniture, fencing, trampolines and other loose items that could be blown away by strong gusts. Drivers should allow extra time for journeys, while walkers are advised to reconsider plans in exposed upland areas during the worst of the weather.

Residents should also take care near the coast, where large waves and flying debris can pose a serious risk. Checking the latest Met Office warnings and travel updates before setting out is strongly recommended.

Although conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the week, Storm Boelo could cause significant disruption across Cumbria over the weekend.
