Walney Homes Evacuated After Suspected Explosive Ordnance Found in Garden

08 Nov 2026 Walney Homes Evacuated After Suspected Explosive Ordnance Found in Garden

Several homes on Walney were evacuated as a precaution after suspected explosive ordnance was discovered in a residential garden, prompting a police cordon.

Cumbria Police established the cordon around Red Ley Lane after the object was found in a garden in the area. Officers called in an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to examine the suspected ordnance and determine what action was required. Residents in nearby properties were temporarily moved from their homes while the assessment and response operation took place.

Police said the evacuation was a precautionary measure while specialists assessed the object. At the time of the initial announcement, officers confirmed there was no known risk to the wider public. The cordon remained in place to allow the EOD team to carry out its work safely, while people in the immediate area were asked to follow police instructions and avoid the restricted zone.

The situation was subsequently declared safe, with police confirming that the cordon was being lifted at 2.45pm. The update brought the emergency response to an end and allowed affected residents to return once the area had been cleared. Officers thanked members of the public for their patience while the incident was dealt with.

The discovery prompted a precautionary response because suspected explosive ordnance can present a danger if disturbed or handled. The specialist disposal team’s assessment was therefore required before the area could be declared safe. Police have not provided further details about the object, including its type, age or how it came to be in the garden.
