Lake District Rescue Operation Launched After Walker Reportedly Trapped Under Boulder

20 Oct 2026 Lake District Rescue Operation Launched After Walker Reportedly Trapped Under Boulder

CUMBRIA, England a major emergency response was launched in the Lake District after reports that a walker had become trapped beneath a boulder at Dropping Crag on Scafell Pike.

Cumbria Police received several emergency calls on Sunday, October 18, prompting the deployment of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team, and a Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick.

The Wasdale team was called out at approximately 5:30 p.m. Although some location information was provided by callers, the team leader was unable to establish direct contact with the person involved.

Given the potential difficulty of moving a large boulder, a specialist underground rescue team was contacted for technical advice. Preparations began for a possible operation to move the rock if necessary.

However, further information from the scene brought reassuring news: a member of the public had managed to free the trapped walker.

The person was then able to walk away from the mountain without requiring further assistance.

The Coastguard helicopter remained at the scene until the person's safety could be confirmed. A member of the mountain rescue team who was running in the area also checked that everything was in order.

The operation involved 13 members of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team and lasted two hours and 46 minutes.

The incident marked the team's 159th callout of the year, underlining the continued demands placed on mountain rescue volunteers across the Lake District.

The successful outcome brought the operation to a safe conclusion, with the walker able to leave the fell on foot.
