Driver Taken Into Custody After Cannabis Found In Vehicles Near Appleby
A driver was taken into police custody after officers stopped two vehicles travelling together near Appleby and discovered cannabis during searches.
Cumbria Police stopped the vehicles on the afternoon of Sunday, 1 November, after they were seen travelling in convoy in suspicious circumstances. Officers searched both vehicles under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found cannabis. The people involved were subsequently dealt with on suspicion of possession offences, police said.
The male driver of one vehicle was also taken into custody after providing a positive roadside sample for cannabis. The roadside result led to his detention, while police dealt with the suspected possession offences involving the people in both vehicles.
The incident comes as police continue to address concerns about drug-related activity in the Appleby area. The local neighbourhood policing team has listed suspected drug use and supply as a priority, with high-visibility patrols, intelligence gathering and partnership work among the measures being used.
A positive roadside test does not, by itself, establish guilt. Any further action will depend on the police investigation and the evidence gathered. The force has not provided further details about the driver or the other people involved in the incident.
