Tour de Furness Cyclist Wins £600 Cycling Equipment Prize

28 Oct 2026 Tour de Furness Cyclist Wins £600 Cycling Equipment Prize

A Tour de Furness participant has won a cycling equipment prize worth £600 following the annual charity cycling event in south Cumbria.

The prize draw formed part of the Tour de Furness, which took place on Sunday 28 June 2026, starting and finishing at Furness Academy in Barrow-in-Furness. Organised by the Rotary Club of Furness, the event welcomes cyclists of different abilities and offers a choice of routes through the Furness countryside. The prize was provided through the event's sponsorship arrangements, which encourage riders to raise money for charitable causes.

The event offered several route options, allowing participants to choose a distance suited to their experience and ambitions. The routes covered countryside across the Furness peninsula and surrounding South Lakes, with longer challenges taking riders through areas including the Duddon Valley and towards Coniston. The range of distances is intended to make the event accessible to leisure cyclists, families and more experienced riders, while providing opportunities to support local charities.

The £600 cycling equipment prize was linked to the event's fundraising arrangements. According to the Tour de Furness guidance, riders who raised more than £50 in sponsorship were eligible to enter the Poole Townsend prize draw. The prize offers an additional incentive for participants to seek sponsorship while taking part in the charity ride. The available information does not identify the winning cyclist by name or specify which equipment was selected.

The Tour de Furness supports St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston, alongside other charitable causes selected by participants. The hospice provides care and support for people with life-limiting conditions and their families. Funds raised through community events help charities continue delivering services, while the cycling challenge gives participants a way to combine physical activity with fundraising. The Rotary Club of Furness coordinates the event with support from sponsors, volunteers and local organisations.

A presentation evening for the 2026 event took place on 7 October at the Crossbar at Barrow AFC. Almost 120 riders had taken part in the four courses, and organisers presented awards to individuals and teams that raised money for charity. St Mary’s Hospice received a donation of £7,000 from the event. The evening also recognised the contributions of sponsors, supporters and volunteers who helped make the cycling challenge possible.

The Tour de Furness is expected to return in 2027, with entries scheduled to open through the event's website from January. Organisers continue to welcome riders of different abilities and encourage participants to raise sponsorship for good causes. The event remains an established part of the local fundraising calendar, bringing together the cycling community while generating financial support for charities serving people across Furness and the surrounding area.
