Pink Gritter to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness Across Cumbria

23 Oct 2026 Pink Gritter to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness Across Cumbria

A specially commissioned pink gritter is set to travel across Cumbria as part of a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and support vital research.

Cumberland Council’s Highways and Transport team is supporting Breast Cancer Now’s annual Wear It Pinkfundraising campaign on Friday, October 23, with staff wearing pink to show their support for people affected by the disease.

The council is also purchasing an 18-tonne pink gritter, which is currently being built and is expected to join its vehicle fleet in 2027. The brightly coloured vehicle will serve as a visible reminder of the importance of cancer awareness, research and support services.

The project is being delivered with support from Motus Commercials Solway and Econ Engineering. Carlisle-based business Thomas Graham & Sons has also donated pink high-visibility clothing for staff participating in the campaign.

Councillor Denise Rollo, the council’s executive member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said the initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to supporting local communities affected by cancer.

She also thanked the local businesses involved for helping bring the project to life.

The Wear It Pink campaign has raised more than £45 million over the past 20 years to support Breast Cancer Now’s research and services. The charity aims to ensure that, by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live well.

Cumberland Council is also exploring opportunities to use its vehicle fleet to support other health awareness initiatives in the future, including prostate cancer awareness.

The new pink gritter is expected to carry its message across Cumbria for years to come, helping keep breast cancer awareness visible on local roads.
