Lake District Hotel Expansion Approved

27 Oct 2026 Lake District Hotel Expansion Approved

A Lake District hotel is set to expand its facilities after the Lake District National Park Authority approved plans for improvements at Derwentwater Hotel in Portinscale, near Keswick.

The 56-bedroom hotel will undergo a series of changes designed to enhance its accommodation and hospitality offerings. The approved plans include eight additional bedrooms, a new ballroom, a restaurant and a café facing the front of the building.

The project will also involve removing the existing conservatory and kitchen, alongside internal alterations to accommodate the new facilities.

The proposed café will be open to both hotel guests and members of the public, providing another place for visitors and local residents to enjoy refreshments.

The addition of a restaurant and ballroom is also expected to broaden the hotel's appeal, creating more opportunities for dining, events and celebrations.

The development represents an investment in the hotel's facilities and the wider visitor economy around Keswick and the northern Lake District.

Above Derwent Parish Council supported the application, particularly welcoming improvements to coach parking arrangements.

Councillors said providing off-road parking for coaches would reduce the need for large vehicles to stop or manoeuvre on the public highway. This could help improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make the surrounding roads safer for pedestrians and other road users.

However, one objection was submitted, raising concerns that the additional guest facilities could increase traffic and parking pressures on nearby public roads.

The objector also called for changes to hotel car park charges and adequate provision for coach parking.

The approved expansion is expected to strengthen Derwentwater Hotel's offering for visitors to the area. With additional accommodation, dining facilities and event space, the project could help the hotel cater to a wider range of guests.

The development also highlights the importance of balancing tourism investment with the needs of local communities, particularly in popular destinations where traffic and parking can be challenging.

With planning permission granted, the proposals mark a significant step forward for the hotel as it prepares for its next phase of development.
