Elon Musk Backs Potential Merger Between Tesla and SpaceX

21 Oct 2026 Elon Musk Backs Potential Merger Between Tesla and SpaceX

Technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla and SpaceX are considering a possible merger, describing the idea as a positive step while stressing that the outcome remains uncertain.

The two companies have established special committees made up of independent directors to examine the proposal following requests from shareholders. Any deal would require further consideration and the necessary shareholder approval.

Musk, who leads both companies, said he would not take part in the committees' discussions because of his conflicting interests.

A merger could strengthen cooperation between Tesla and SpaceX in several areas, including artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, robotics and communications technology.

Tesla is widely known for its electric vehicles and work in automation, while SpaceX specialises in space launches and satellite internet services through Starlink. Both businesses are also expanding their involvement in advanced computing and AI-related projects.

The companies have already begun collaborating on chip development through their Terafab initiative, which aims to advance semiconductor manufacturing.

Combining their resources could create opportunities to share technology, research and infrastructure across their operations.

Despite Musk's support, a merger is far from guaranteed. The independent committees have not agreed on transaction terms, and shareholders would ultimately have an important role in determining whether the proposal proceeds. A deal would represent a major development in Musk's business empire, bringing two influential technology companies under a single corporate structure.

For now, discussions remain at an exploratory stage. Investors and the wider technology industry will be watching closely for further announcements as the companies assess the potential benefits and challenges of combining their businesses.
